Nic, the person
I’m a mom, bookworm, & plant enthusiast. As an early bird & someone that thrives on routine, I love a 5am wake-up, a hot coffee, & enjoying the quiet of the morning (before my kid wakes up & the chaos begins). This also means I am in bed at 8:30pm & treat my bedtime routine as a non-negotiable. I spend most of my free time reading or listening to audiobooks, in my home gym, or trying to find balance in my busy life. While meal-prep is essential in this phase of my life (& has been for the last decade & a half), I love trying new recipes & coming up with ways to make my usual meal rotation less boring. I also love the outdoors, & you’ll often catch me in the back garden, going for a little mental health walk, or out on a bike ride with my kid.
Nic, the therapist
(& still a person):
I practice from a biopsychosocial framework, recognizing the interplay between your physical, social, & psychological experiences. I LOVE compassion-focused therapy & other third-wave cognitive-behavioural approaches like ACT & DBT. As an integrative therapist I blend cognitive-behavioural & somatic approaches based on the needs of my clients. I believe in doing a thorough assessment of the many factors that may be impacting your wellbeing, because we can’t CBT you out of anxiety, depression, or sexual dysfunction that is caused by undiagnosed sleep apnea or a thyroid problem.
The nerdy stuff
I take a collaborative, integrative approach to my practice. I am passionate about helping people make sense of their behaviour & patterns so they can combat shame & make meaningful changes in their lives & relationships. Sometimes this looks like digging into your past to understand why you needed to adapt the way you did, & sometimes it’s simply seeing what supports, skills, or reparative experiences you need in order to show up how you want in your life & relationships.
I regularly encourage clients to involve additional supports in their journey, including accessing the free dietician support through Health Link (because nutrition & mental health are deeply connected), talking to their medical provider(s) about specific concerns, & investing in their supportive relationships outside of therapy (because therapy is cool, but quality relationships have a massive impact on your wellbeing). I believe good care is collaborative & multi-disciplinary, & I am really big on staying in my own lane. I can tell you that fibre is fermented by your gut bacteria to make cool compounds like butyrate, which is amazing for your brain, but giving you individual nutrition advice is some other nerds job (a dietician’s job, specifically).
The Vibe (honestly, the most important part IMO)
I am not a blank slate therapist. I believe therapy should feel safe & comfortable, & you should be able to show up as your messy, uncurated self. But I know that doesn’t always feel possible. Odds are, at the time of our intake session, I’m just a stranger from the internet. Hesitancy about opening up is understandable, especially if you haven’t tried therapy before. My goal is to help you feel confident exploring & expressing yourself, which involves co-creating a therapeutic relationship that feels authentic & secure. Because I want you to show up as your authentic self, I also show up as my real, imperfect self in our work together. I use humour, share resources (including reels & memes, if they’re relevant), & do my best to help you feel understood (because everything makes sense, in context), important (because you are) & like your experience matters (because it does).
